Meet Mata: The Creative One

Email Mata

ehAs well as being the co-founder and editor of JawkwardLOL Mata, a New Zealand born Samoan, reviews TV shows, books, films, plays and music. She dabbles in fiction, is well-versed in fangirl speak, prone to nerd-rages, and likes learning different languages. Upon graduating from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Arts, double majoring in English and Political Studies she discovered just how difficult it was to secure a job in her desired field- especially when she didn’t know at the time what that desired field was.

Starting JawkwardLOL was a way to offer her awkward NZ view on pop-culture and entertainment, however it was how she discovered just what she wanted to do with her life. Currently attending AUT University, completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Communications specialising in Journalism, she hopes her ability to tell stories will give voice to the marginalised few. Mata finds it easy to pontificate about pop-culture and entertainment, but has a new-found commitment to getting Pacific stories out into the world.

She now works as a reporter for Oceania Media, mostly known for their flagship publication SPASIFIK Magazine, New Zealand’s only publication dedicated to both Pacific and Maori people.
