X Factor NZ - American Hits [and Misses] Week

Although all you really need to do is click on the #XFactorNZ hashtag on twitter, we’re here to talk about tonight’s X Factor NZ performances.

Moorhouse - Laundry, their story was about their inability to locate the laundry chute. That’s a thing, isn’t it? Song: Usher - OMG. It was enough to probably get them through to the next round.

Jackie - I can’t remember what her story was about. I think maybe this happened when Jackie’s story came on for me.

Song: Britney Spears - Toxic. Started out alright, and thought that maybe the song’s tempo would pick up and become interesting but instead she stayed at the same pace and it bored everyone. Also, her stage looked like the inside of Tom Bachelor’s mind, darkened by his recent elimination, but still buzzy as hell.

Whenua - Boxing. Song: Jay-Z ft Alicia Keys - Empire State of of Mind. Amazing. It seems like Whenua can’t win with Mel, he sings something slow and she thinks he’s boring so he switches it up and Mel thinks he needs to slow it down. C’mon. Whenua’s going to win, we’re not biased he’s just had the most consistently in-tune, good performances of the competition.

Cassie - ‘Reece Mastin touched my arm.’ Song: Taylor Swift - Lovestory. It was a bit boring, a little flat and although I think saving T-Swizzle to pull out at the most opportune moment was a good move- she sang a slightly outdated (yes Taytay songs have expiry dates) Taylor Swift Song.

Gap 5 - Rainbow’s End? Well, guess they needed a pick-me-up. Song: Destiny’s Child Bills. One of them forgot the lyrics, at this point in the competition you’d think remembering the lyrics wouldn’t be an issue anymore. However their performance was formidable and they can stay.

Benny - Benny needs to pull it together, apparently being in the bottom two shook him. Rightly so. Song: Phantom Planet - California (The OC theme). We liked his performance, but I think he’s going home next week. Probably bias because it sort of dredged up old OC feels but let’s just. Ugh. Stop that. Anyway, the judges seem to be pushing him out the way they dogged on every Anna Wilson performance before she was voted off, no?

Special Mentions:

- Dominic Bowden’s hat at the beginning, it bears mentioning that it was a bad move on his part. He already looks like a bellend, no need to top it off with a stetson.

- Did Simon predict who’s going home tomorrow night?

Tonight on X Factor NZ, ADIOS AMIGOS!

Mean performances from Dane Rumble and the Jupiter Project and Reece Mastin, have to say that these were probably the best non-contestant performances we’ve had all season. Props to Reece’s stage people, his set up was pretty cool.

Gap 5, who I was sure would be going home today, were the first to be told they were saved. Followed by Whenua, of-course, Cassie and Moorehouse (leaving a very ecstatic Mel Blatt). Finally, It came down to Jackie, Benny or Tom before Dominic Bowden left us on a cliffhanger and sending us into an ad-break before we got to find out that Jackie was safe.

Tom went back to his audition days for his survival song, something rockish and raw.

Benny went vulnerable with a stripped down acoustic version of Can’t Help Falling In Love.

Twitter was torn, who did they hate more? People were calling for Tom’s scruffy head on a platter and some were calling for Benny to be ironically killed off, Hunger Games style. However it was up to the judges, and if they went two a piece it would be down to deadlock- meaning whoever had the lowest votes were out. However because Ruby abstained from voting, taking a page out of Mel B’s page from that time Mel had to choose between L.O.V.E and Moorhouse and refused to participate, deadlock was taken away. So with Mel choosing to vote Benny off and Stan and Dan both deciding to go the other way- we farewell Tom.

Special Mentions:

- What will become of TomJack? JackTom? Tommie Jachelor? Okay I’ll stop.

- Daniel wore a kilt and Dominic made it awkward for everyone when he said he hoped that Dan was wearing underpants.

- Reece Mastin was dared by someone to say ‘I just came’ on live NZ TV tonight, why? Because EFF NZ ON AIR, that’s why. (Australia’s words, not ours.)

- Next week we get songs made in America. ‘MURICA!

Top 40 Night - X Factor NZ Review

About time the judges were forced to keep their contestants’ song choices within this decade. A few performances didn’t quite hit the mark, however one or two of the contestants did relatively well. Nothing too out of the ordinary, really. Quick breakdown?

Cassie’s performance of Pompeii by Bastille: The song suited her, mixed feelings on twitter about her song choice, but it may be enough to save her. What was with the crimptastic hairstyle?

Moorhouse and Will.I.Am’s #thatPower: Catchy, slightly off and visually jerky- neither of them twerked; the audience seemed to love it, however.

Whenua’s cover of James Arthur’s cover of Shontelle’s song, Impossible: His voice is golden, but for one of the judges it was too perfect. Personally I’ll take musically perfect over ear-vomit any day.

Anna Wilson Radioactive - Imagine Dragons: Her performance was edgier than last week, something the judge’s panned her for not being, and yet one of the judges this week STILL wasn’t impressed. We liked it, in fact we found it to be one of the better performances of the night, save for that bit where she did that kneel-down move. Stay standing, oh and slap the desk more often! Maybe throw a drink in one of the judge’s faces.

Benny Tipene’s rendition of Lost by Frank Ocean: It was different, and not in a really bad way. Sure he looks like a run-down karate kid, and the beginning was sorta boring but when he got into it it was alright aye.

Gap 5 Blurred Lines: What to say? Interesting song choice, and I don’t hate it? Didn’t hate it. Harmonies sounded slightly off- however they looked cool.

Jackie Thomas’ performance: Was a bit bored to be honest.

Tom Bachelor and Ho Hey: The judges spent a good minute or so discussing his lack of footwear, is the stage heated? He must have been cold. His performance didn’t suffer too much for it, it was alright.

Special Mentions:

- Mel and Not Drunk Enough: She wasn’t drunk enough, which meant she was sort of on the ball. (Except when it came to Anna.)

- Stan and Preacher Wear: Digging the tan suit, not really.

- Ruby and Her Crimped Hair: Dat hair. (Seriously though, she gives some good advice I reckon. Better than some of her fellow judges.)

- Dan and his outfit choice: Wasn’t too bad this week, doesn’t make up for last week.

But, who’s going home tomorrow?
