Who’s that girl? IT’S JESS. No, not quirky Jessica Day from New Girl but rather the equally awkward, quirky, entertaining, amazing Jess Kumar. Yes, I know I have not written since my travel posts last year but I have something serious to talk about now. My favourite topic. Me.
On Monday I received my study materials for my Chartered Accounting final year studies. It sat in shrink-wrap as I watched TV on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Friday, I thought hmmm . . . pulling shrink-wrap off things is fun, let’s do that! A few pages fell out, gave it a skim read. “This will a extremely busy year, it is vital that you maintain a good work-life balance.” I immediately started thinking about what others have said:
“This was the hardest year of my life and I have kids.”
“This is not like university, it is real world.”
“Its different when you are also working full time.” Well . . . . Fuck!
I feel like I have always managed to cruise by with most things. (Driving excluded, still dislike it with a passion.) It was me who watched an entire season of 30 Rock two days before my Auditing final exam but somehow managed to ace it. It was me who did everything last minute but never had to pull an all-nighter. It was me who did not go to any classes for about three weeks so that I could catch up on all Doctor Who episodes. Something tells me that attitude will not fly this year. I need to try harder, not just to pass my exams but to pass in life. I need to learn not to give up way that easily. I need to learn that results are not instant. But most of all I need to learn about commitment. I need to realise that sometimes, as the Mainland cheese ad advises, “Good things take time.” (You read this in the old man voice didn’t you?)
In 2013 I tweeted that I wanted to read every issue of the Economist in 2013. People thought I was crazy. They were right. I survived 2 issues. In 2014, I thought I would read every single issue of The New Yorker. Why? Being pretentious most probably. This time I went a bit further though and subscribed for the year. (I am somewhat of an impulsive buyer, remember the time I bought that ukelele?) It is February and I am already three issues behind. I tell myself I have no time to read but that is not true, I somehow had time to watch 20 hours of TV last weekend. I found the articles that I did read fascinating so it is not me being bored. I am just cruising by and that has got to stop.
So by this time next year:
- I would have read every issue of The New Yorker. (I have also subscribed to Metro but I managed to read that cover to cover yesterday. I also found out that Colin Craig’s Conservatives Party have a youth division. WHAT THE HELL?)
- I would have passed my exams and become a Chartered Accountant. (And not be the wanker who puts letters after there name once they are qualified.)
- I would have posted weekly on Sunday nights on how I am progressing and what interesting things caught my eye during the week.
So come along for the ride! You’ll have fun. As much fun as I had while watching Kristen Wiig as Harry Styles on The Tonight Show. Kristen Wiig as Harry Styles is oddly very attractive.
Until then, I will be perfecting my Hip-Hop moves as shown below. Adios Amigos.
** So Jess, did you write this entire blog post because you are in reality just procrastinating from studying? . . . . . . SHUT UP! I WAS NOT TAKING ANY QUESTIONS! **
