Food is any material eaten to provide nutrition to an organisms. Food is generally of animal, plant or fungi origin, and consists of necessary nutrients, including proteins, vitamins, sugars, carbohydrates or iron. In humans, food is used to satisfy the basic needs of the body and prevent illness. The food we eat is categorized into three main groups: animal, plant and fungi.

Animal food includes flesh, meat, fish, milk, eggs, honey and nuts. These are the most important dietary ingredients. Plant food consists of vegetables, legumes and fruits. Fungi include beans, mushrooms, cucumbers, tomatoes, spinach, carrots, squash and potatoes. A healthy diet should contain a variety of both animal and plant food, including some vitamin and mineral supplements.

There are two kinds of food: solid food and liquid food. Solid food comprises of food particles that are solid or not water-like in nature. Examples of solid food include: whole grains, cereals, pasta, oatmeal, beans, nuts, wheat berries, and refined sugar. Liquid food comprises of particles that are either liquid or semi-solid in nature, but which do not retain nutrients once they reach the gastrointestinal tract. Examples of liquid food include: soup, fruit juice, milk, ice-cream, poultry products, sauces and junk mail.

Processing methods can be divided into two types: natural and artificial. Artificial processing methods include adding salt, coloring, flavoring, hormones, pesticides and preservatives to food. Artificial food can be very bland, but does not offer enough nutritional value. Some of the artificial food that has gained a popular following is rice cookers, canned vegetables and even tofu. Although natural processing methods may be less expensive, artificial processing methods are more expensive and may be associated with greater health risks, especially when used for highly nutritious real food. For this reason, it is always recommended to choose healthy alternatives over processed food whenever possible.

The first step toward living a healthy lifestyle is to get enough folic acid in your diet. Folic acid helps the body to produce red blood cells, which help keep the immune system healthy and capable of fighting off infections.
